Do we need to do things differently in order to address our community's literacy crisis?

Do we need to bring our practices into the 21st century?

San Juan Reads and Writes

The purpose of SJRW is to compel San Juan Unified to formally examine the question of whether or not the Strategic Plan and LCAP goals with regards to literacy are in alignment with actions.

SJRW (not affiliated with SJUSD) will present petition signatures to the school district that show the community does not accept the status quo - and change is likely necessary.

Please see the 3-Year Plan page and Principles of SJRW for more information.

SJRW was founded in the Fall of 2025 by Caroline Digman, a mom and a teacher in San Juan Unified.

About the Founder

I'm a parent of a child in SJUSD and I'm in my 11th year of teaching the second grade here.

My parents were Kansas Quakers. They had my sister and me in Arizona . Mom was an administrative assistant and Dad was an ed psych/case manager for low-income families with severely disabled children. In 1986 we moved to Berkeley so dad could attend seminary. Mom joined the University of California headquarters.

Our family moved a lot. I went to five different elementary schools. We moved a lot because Methodist ministers often move churches based on church need.

My dad was good at helping churches bring their goals and actions into alignment. He'd say, "I know you SAY you serve Jesus, but your actions say you just serve potlucks...you must also serve those who suffer..." Mom also relentlessly focused on goal and action alignment. She retired as Associate VP of Business Operations in Agriculture and Natural Resources. She constantly asked, "How does this help the California farmer?"

When I was a teenager, dinner table conversations usually focused on... goal and action alignment! That was their special interest! Eventually, it became one of my favorite things to talk about too. My dad used to say, "Make the plan, work the plan!"

I've run voter registration campaigns and I've been a litigation secretary and office manager in the environmental and criminal defense fields. I went to McGeorge but I hated it and left halfway through to be a teacher. I've been in education since 2011. I thought I was going to teach high school history. But I fell in love with primary. I have two joys in my life: my son and teaching children to read.
